Pediatric Dental Sedation in Derry
Sedation & Anesthesia Options
While going to the dentist can be a nerve-wracking experience for anyone, it can be especially worrisome for children. At Haas Dental Associates, we strive to create a relaxing and welcoming environment. Even so, sometimes it’s just not enough, and sedation is needed to reduce your child’s anxiety, prevent discomfort, and help our dentists work. As pediatric specialists, we know what it takes to improve your child’s smile safely and effectively while keeping them comfortable. We are extensively trained in both conscious and complete pediatric sedation. In fact, Dr. Haas is one of only a handful of pediatric dentists in the state to hold a permit to sedate children. We offer our pediatric dental sedation to patients throughout Derry and the surrounding area.
Our pediatric sedation options include:
- Nitrous oxide: Often referred to as laughing gas and have been around for over 200 years. This relaxant is delivered via a mask to minimize discomfort during your child’s appointment. Anxiety is similar to Valium and pain management is similar to Tylenol or Advil. The patient remains awake at all times and can easily communicate. It is not strong enough for all levels of anxiety and the patient must be able to breathe through their nose for administration. It is a low-impact sedative, so there is very little downtime post-treatment.
- Oral/IN sedation: A stronger level of sedation than nitrous oxide alone. The patient drinks the medication or it is administered as a nose spray. Anterograde amnesia is expected for everything except the administrator of the medication. The patient is awake at all times and the level of sedation is considered mild to possibly moderate sedation. some children can become emotional and the medication is not always strong enough for some patients. It also has a relaxing short waking time (30 minutes with N20 used concurrently and 10 minutes when used alone). Local anesthesia is still required.
- IV sedation/PDAA: Intravenous sedation is a great option for those who are very nervous or for individuals with special needs. This puts the the patient in a deeper level of sedation, so your child will be asleep during their treatment to help our dentists perform a safe and detailed treatment in our office. All treatment is completed at one time. An IV does need a pediatric anesthesiologist to administer the sedation and we also have 2 nurses available. Recovery is a quick and it's a very safe procedure.
- Hospital GA - Patient is completely asleep at Parkland Medical Center and the patient is intubated. All work is completed at once and it's a very safe and controlled environment.
Our team at Haas Dental Associates has years of experience safely and effectively sedating patients in order to create a less scary experience. Each of our sedation techniques offer their own benefits, which is why we will thoroughly go over your options prior to your appointment, so when you arrive, you feel confident that your child will be in the best of hands.
