Extractions

While our ultimate goal is to preserve every tooth, this is not an option in some cases. If you need a tooth extracted, our dentists have advanced training in surgical extraction techniques to make sure that your tooth is removed safely and to minimize the risk of complications. In addition to effective, painless anesthesia to simplify the procedure, we have a range of sedation options to ensure that you will be comfortable throughout the process.

Common reasons for extractions:

  • Infected (abscessed) tooth

  • Large cavity (decay)

  • Broken or fractured tooth

  • Impacted tooth, most commonly wisdom teeth

  • Recommended by an orthodontist due to spacing issues

  • Severe periodontal, or gum disease, condition

  • Over retained baby teeth

Simple Tooth Extractions

This procedure does not involve an incision or surrounding tissue removal. Usually only a minimal amount of a local anesthetic will be needed for a painless procedure.

Surgical Extractions

Surgical extractions are necessary when there is an indication to remove surrounding area such as bone or gums. An example of a surgical extraction may be wisdom teeth removal.

In cases that require a surgical extraction we may refer you to a local oral surgeon who we work closely with.

Implants

We often recommend an implant to replace a tooth that has been extracted. With proper planning this can be done relatively quickly and painlessly. A restoration, or crown, will be fabricated for the implant after a period of approximately 3 months, but it’s often possible for a front tooth to have a temporary covering during this healing phase.

CT Scan

At times we will need to have a specialized x-ray taken called a CT Scan. This is often referred to as a Cone Beam x-ray or a Cat Scan. This image can be used for multiple purposes including:

  • Implant planning

  • Pathology

  • Fractures

  • Root canal procedures

  • Extractions

  • TMJ evaluation
